Authors : Phil Butcher and Jenny Devaux
We are both over 60 and live in adjacent villages in South Norfolk. Our background is in amateur dramatics, having originally been members of the same local drama group for fifteen years. We have been writing performance pieces together for over ten years. Most of these have been radio plays, along with some shorter items, as well as one act and full-length stage plays. These have been performed by local drama groups, as well as by our own group, Stuff and Folly, which we set up in 2019. We are excited to have our work showcased at The Barn and hope the cast and audience enjoy it as much as we enjoyed writing it!
Director : Mandy Witt
As a founder member, Mandy has been a director, an actor and on the committee for the past 50 years. Her lead roles include Florence Nightingale and more recently, Grace in Entertaining Angels. Over the years she has directed some great musicals including Made in Dagenham.
Since Lockdown she has been actively involved in keeping The Barn at the forefront of socially distanced entertainment. Mandy has greatly enjoyed being involved with the current Playwrights Showcase, both in selecting and directing one of the winning entries.
Cast :
Deirdre - Maggs Latter
Maggs first trod the boards at The Barn back in 70’s. Her first ‘lead‘ was in Abigail’s Party and her favourite roles have been Snoopy in Peppermint Patty and the obnoxious wife in Andy Capp. She is also Club Secretary. Her work across the Borough has been comprehensive; Drama Adviser for SCC Education Department, running Studio 2 Drama School in Walton, a drama Teacher for Adult Education, Arts Development Officer, Leisure and Culture for Elmbridge Borough and one time panel member of the Princes Trust. She now feels ‘full up’ with art and culture, but satisfyingly so. Her main activities now are on the speaker circuit and singing. She is also Trustee of The RC Sherriff Trust, Theatre Studies Tutor for The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Chair of The Friends of Riverhouse Barn.
Colin - Craig Robertson
Following Craig's directorial debut with 'Luck of The Draw', he now returns to the stage for his fifth performance with The Barn Theatre. Craig’s other performances at this iconic theatre include roles in 'Close Encounters' and 'Glorious' amongst others. He has also had roles with The Ember Players in Esher, along with groups in Oxford and Woburn, where he appeared in ‘As You Like It’, ‘Harvey’ and ‘Aladdin’. When not treading the boards, Craig enjoys smearing paint on canvas for relaxation and when in need of a thrill he braves the cold water in rivers, lakes or the sea. A memorable trip to the Inaugural Scottish Winter Swimming Championships at Loch Tay in 2019 earned Craig a medal in the individual freestyle 100 metres ice swim.
St Peter - Charlie Currier
Having toured several times with the National Youth Music Theatre as a teenager, Charlie made a return to acting after a gap of over 30 years in The Barn’s recent production of Luck of the Draw, having been persuaded to audition by his friend, Craig Robertson, after seeing Charlie “perform” in a murder mystery evening. Charlie is looking forward to returning to the theatre for this performance after a long year of lockdown. Having briefly considered trying to forge a career as an actor after he left school, in the end he preferred the romance of becoming a lawyer.”
Satan - Faith Powell
Faith has been a member and supporter of The Barn for many years, but has only been on its stage a couple of times, the most memorable being in Equus. For Runnymede Drama Group she had National and International success as the ebullient Nurse in Lear's Daughters and as the effervescent Bosom lady in BED, represented England in the British finals of one act plays. Other notable performances elsewhere have been Marie in Calendar Girls, Mrs Meers in Millie, Maggie in 42nd Street and perhaps her favourite, Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act. Faith won Best Comedy Actress at the Elmbridge Drama Festival. Her hobbies include cycling, creative writing and singing 10 verses of The Wheels on the Bus to her granddaughter.
Judas - Richard Hurst
Richard has been a member of The Barn Theatre Club for some years and has always found it to be an enjoyable experience. Amongst other productions, he has performed in two of The Barn’s largest musical shows, Jack the Ripper and Fiddler on the Roof. Apart from singing, he also enjoys acting and took important roles in both Daisy Pulls It Off and Arsenic and Old Lace. He has worked with Mandy on several occasions and is enjoying being a part of slightly zany The Good, The Bad and the Watsons.
