This very funny and true to life comedy had a succesful run at the Chichester Festival Theatre

and then in the West End starring Lee Mack, Amanda Abbington and Frances Barber.

The plot centres on suburban couple Peter and Debbie, whose polite invitation to a stranger

on holiday has potentially dire consequences. Well, we’ve all done it, haven’t we?

We meet some nice people, we say “Oh, we must stay in touch” but we don’t really mean it.

Do we?????

Elsa takes them at their word and this almost complete stranger turns up on their doorstep

before they can put her off. Just before her arrival, Debbie decides to do a Google search on

her and what she discovers absolutely terrifies her. Elsa would appear to be a serial killer

following the suspicious death of her husbands. And this is the person they’ve invited into

their home to spend time with their teenage children.

So just how can they find a way to get rid of her without being too impolite.

Because we Brits just hate to be thought of as impolite, even in such extreme circumstances.

Character break downs & playing ages

Peter

The main character. A Londoner who seems constantly exasperated, with somewhat manic

energy. Your average Guardian reading husband with two kids. His world is imperfect but

settled and certainly not set up for an unexpected visitor.

Lee Mack played this part in the London production.

Playing age 45-55. Male.

Debbie

Peter’s wife, who is initially more open to befriending Elsa, but is equally as shocked

and uncomfortable as her husband when her potentially murderous nature is revealed.

Playing age 40-50. Female.

Elsa

A vibrant outspoken Trump-loving American widow Peter and Debbie meet on holiday.

She is described as “lusty” and “kind of wonderful” but her stay with the British couple

becomes a source of panic for them once they suspect she is a serial killer.

Playing age 55-70. Female.

The Neighbour

An irritating and passive/aggressive neighbour who also becomes a target of Elsa’s attention.

He constantly makes excuses for Peter as to why Peter keeps ignoring him.

Playing age almost any. Male.

Alex

Stroppy disinterested teenager. Video game obsessed, averse to washing.

Playing age late teens. Male.

Rosie

Stroppy teenager. Melodramatic, intolerant.

Playing age late teens. Female.

P C Junkin

Cameo but hilarious part.
